Reflective Portfolio: Photographing with the Ears

When I began my photographic practice 25 years ago, I worked as a photojournalist for a few months. The last photographs I made for a newspaper were taken in Marseille with a non-profit organisation which used to help young immigrants under 18 who came on their own from Morocco and Algeria. At that time, I felt that my images failed to describe the situation of these boys. They were making photographs by themselves and I was interested in what they would reveal of the life they were living. I felt there was something to learn by taking into account their point of view on their situation. A few months later, I thus came back with Yto Barrada and Anaïs Masson for a two-year-long workshop in order to work with them rather than working on them.
