The Social Construction of the Other: Invisibility and Surveillance

Chapter 2 explores the pervasive issue of othering as experienced in general by intercultural encounters and in particular by female Muslim students. In this chapter, the narrative illustrates a common theme of Muslim women not being “like us” based on names and hijab othering. In this regard it is a reminder that even an American nationality does not prevent such marginalization.
