A substantial rise in chronic diseases and the affected individuals create a need to revamp the health care systems. Smart health systems have been developed using pervasive technologies specifically machine learning (ML) and artificial intelligence (AI) to overcome the limitations of traditional brick-and-mortar healthcare organizations such as healthcare centers and hospitals. The primary applications include diagnosis and medication recommendation, administrative activities, and patient involvement. This paper intends to discuss present state-of-the-art smart healthcare systems highlighting the potential of AI and assistive frameworks. The authors also discuss how AI and ML technologies are incorporated with smart health to address the challenges of healthcare access, availability, and costs to better serve society. The present research challenges, potential future directions, and opportunities that pervasive technologies offer are discussed to present a comprehensive insight into the current systems. The outcomes of this paper will benefit healthcare designers, professionals, and researchers to design improved Smart healthcare systems.
