Myths, folklore, and misconceptions are deeply rooted in culture, religion, and traditions and shape individual beliefs and attitudes. Historically, people around the world and across various cultures have held beliefs based on myths fueled by misconceptions. Misconceptions about people with disabilities, largely accepted by people without any scientific logic or reasoning to negate them, end up resulting in stereotypical thinking toward people with disabilities. Such misconceptions promote negative thinking, resulting in greater discrimination and stigmatization. They become the roots of attitudinal barriers, making it more difficult for people with disabilities to strive for inclusion. This chapter examines certain myths and misconceptions that are prevalent across various cultures and are still believed by many people. This is followed by scientific justification against these myths to help people think beyond these deeply rooted misconceptions. Also, a series of recommendations are provided to change the traditional beliefs that form the foundations of these misconceptions.
