Artificial Intelligence and Accessibility

Artificial Intelligence (AI) presents both transformative opportunities and significant challenges for accessibility and inclusive design. AI-driven innovations, such as advanced speech transcription, smart prosthetics, and personalized learning tools, can significantly enhance independence and dismantle historical barriers faced by people with disabilities. However, these same technologies risk erecting new obstacles through algorithmic bias, exclusionary design practices, and fragmented accessibility standards. This entry critically examines AI’s dual role as an enabler and barrier, highlighting how biases embedded in algorithms and exclusion of disabled communities in AI development perpetuate ableism and digital inequity. Advocating for a shift toward rights-based, participatory frameworks, the entry emphasizes the importance of inclusive codesign and cross-sector governance anchored in disability rights. By proactively addressing biases, standardizing accessibility policies, and ensuring meaningful participation of persons with disabilities, AI can evolve into a socially just tool, enabling genuine inclusion rather than deepening digital divides.
