Physical Health Issues Among Adults with Intellectual Disabilities
摘要
Many individuals with intellectual disabilities face health inequalities that may be due in part to many co-morbidities with physical health issues such as obesity, cardiovascular disease, chronic health conditions, and type 2 diabetes. There are multiple reasons for these disparities, but they may result in key disparities in statistical rates (including incidence and prevalence) for physical health issues among people with intellectual disabilities. Despite these health disparities, there are interventions that may be implemented to help narrow the gap for these disparities. These include annual health checks (or annual health assessments) by a primary care provider, physical activity interventions (both in-person and online), and measures to promote population-based cancer screening, such as breast, cervical, and bowel screening programs. Annual health checks are often conducted by a general practitioner or learning disability nurse and can detect chronic diseases including diabetes, cardiovascular diseases, and obesity at earlier stages. They may also allow for health promotion interventions such as counselling to address weight management issues. Physical activity interventions such as participation in Special Olympics may also help people with intellectual disabilities to become more physically active and result in better weight management. Finally, while adults with these disabilities may not participate in population-based cancer screening programs at the same rates as the general population, reasons for this disparity have been investigated by researchers. By promoting all of these forms of chronic disease prevention and early detection, the health inequalities faced by this group may be reduced.
