This chapter examines the disproportionate negative impacts of COVID-19 on the quality of life, employment, education, coping mechanisms, and healthcare access of individuals with disabilities. In addition to the overall adverse effects, individuals with distinct disabilities encountered specific challenges. Individuals with hearing impairments had challenges in understanding communication due to their dependence on tactile aids, the use of face masks, and the requirement for physical distance. The absence of accessible information increases the vulnerability of those with visual impairments to contracting the virus. Individuals with locomotor disabilities experienced adverse impacts from deconditioning during the pandemic, whereas children with disabilities lacked access to rehabilitative programs. Numerous individuals with disabilities, including those impacted by spinal cord injuries, osteoarthritis, and cancer, encountered interrupted treatment. Individuals with cognitive impairments perceived the encounter as frightening or oppressive. In addition to the effects on disabilities, it is uncertain how many individuals acquired disabilities over this era because of COVID-19’s capacity to aggravate pre-existing conditions. This chapter aims to encompass essential aspects of the subject by offering an introductory review of how disability influenced individuals’ experiences and outcomes throughout the pandemic.
