Group Psychotherapy in Bipolar Disorder

Bipolar disorder (BD) is characterized by between (hypo)mania and depression and sometimes includes mixed features. One of the psychosocial interventions for BD is group psychotherapy. There are many different group psychotherapies based on various approaches, such as psychodynamic therapy, cognitive-behavioral therapy, family therapy, interpersonal social rhythm therapy, and mindfulness-based cognitive therapy. This entry aims to take an integrative perspective and will provide information about the nature of mood fluctuations in BD, as well as discuss group psychotherapy studies based on different approaches and their effectiveness. Additionally, it will mention the Integrative Cognitive Model along with findings from a preliminary study based on this model. This entry will also include qualitative and quantitative studies on group psychotherapies for BD from a historical perspective and will pay attention to include the impact of group therapies on the experience level.
