Advances in Biomarkers and Diagnostic Tools for Disabilities: Historical Development and Future Prospects

In recent years, social survey research has combined traditional self-reported health evaluations with biologically derived indicators and physical health metrics, using biomarkers as objective measurements of biological processes. By identifying disorders that may be presymptomatic or fall below clinical diagnostic criteria, biomarkers that work as indicators of normal biological functioning and disease states offer advantages over self-assessments. Their ability to forecast mortality and morbidity and identify differences in health risks due to socioeconomic status has been demonstrated. Nonetheless, their advantages, the high expense of collecting biomarkers, and their ambiguous contributions to social and economic studies present difficulties. The connection between biomarkers and disability a complicated social construct impacted by both internal and external factors has received little scientific attention. Often, disability denotes long-term impairments that result in high expenses for society, such as early retirement and unemployment. Creating efficient policies and screening programs requires a thorough understanding of the disability process, which includes everything from acute medical conditions to residual functional limitations. Biomarkers in population-representative data may improve our comprehension of these mechanisms and guide the development of care and disability management plans in the setting of longer life expectancies.
