Current Physiotherapy Approaches in Stroke

Stroke is characterized by a reduction in blood flow to the brain, which results in the death of brain cells. Strokes are classified into two principal categories: hemorrhagic, which is caused by bleeding, and ischemic, which is caused by a reduction in blood flow. Both types of stroke result in impaired functionality of specific regions of the brain. Such conditions can potentially result in acute neurological complications of varying severity. The symptoms of a stroke are dependent upon the region of the brain that is affected. However, they often manifest as difficulties in controlling the extremities, muscle weakness, cognitive impairment, dysphagia, grip and fine motor dysfunction, sensory disturbances, and deficits in balance and coordination. Although the impact of stroke on young adults is more pronounced due to the longer life expectancy of stroke survivors, it is also a prevalent condition in the elderly population. Consequently, neurorehabilitation represents a crucial initial phase in the reduction of the long-term personal and social costs associated with stroke sequelae. This permits a diverse range of methodologies to be employed and facilitates the continued investigation of novel approaches. It is vital to collate this literature to facilitate access to the ever-expanding body of knowledge. This chapter provides an overview of the latest developments in stroke treatment and their current intended applications.
