Invisible Disabilities

A significant number of people experience severe health conditions that are not obviously visible to others, yet they affect their day-to-day functioning. At a societal level, these individuals risk being judged and discriminated against when their external appearance does not match the internal reality. The attitudinal and behavioral barriers can be more disabling for them than the disability itself. Lack of awareness and education among the general public to be more empathetic to those not showing visible markers of their sufferings remains a pivotal factor, allowing the dualistic thinking that creates the divide between people with disabilities and those without. This chapter aims to increase awareness among society to be more knowledgeable and understand such disabilities. The concept of empathy and the art of using the right language not to offend those suffering is also discussed. A series of recommendations are made targeting the general public, health and social care professionals, and the education sector in how to reduce the risk of stigma and discrimination toward people with invisible disabilities. This work aims to help create an environment where people are empowered to express their views and discuss their hidden conditions without fearing being judged.
