Health Behavior Change

摘要

This chapter reviews health behavior change from the perspective of selected theories and models, which help to understand, describe, and support behavior change. We provide a comprehensive overview of the factors and strategies supporting health behavior change in individuals with disabilities. Health behavior is defined as any action that sustains long-term well-being and prevents health constraints, including adherence to medical advice and lifestyle decisions such as nutrition and physical activity. The importance of considering personal, environmental, and healthcare factors when addressing health behavior change especially for individuals with disabilities who may face unique challenges due to varying degrees of physical, cognitive, sensory, or emotional impairments is outlined. The chapter provides a variety of theoretical models that explain health behavior change, including motivational models like the protection motivation theory (PMT), which highlights the function of fear appeals in influencing behavior, and volitional models that focus on the gap between intention and action. Stage theories, for instance, the transtheoretical model (TTM), are discussed for their ability to categorize individuals based on their motivation and previous experiences regarding adopting new health behaviors. Hybrid models, for example, the health action process approach (HAPA), integrate elements from motivational, volitional, and stage models, offering a more holistic understanding of behavior change. The theories advocate for tailored interventions that accommodate the individual needs and capabilities of persons with disabilities, promoting empowerment, autonomy, and inclusive participation. The transformative potential of artificial intelligence (AI) as well as machine learning in personalizing healthcare interventions, enhancing accessibility, and facilitating behavior change is a field of increasing importance, which needs to be taken into account, too. In conclusion, this overview calls for future research to test these theories within the context of disabilities and to develop more disability-specific approaches, aiming to prevent the deterioration of limitations and to manage disability through health behavior change. We conclude by envisioning a future where health promotion programs are inclusive, adaptive, and leverage the power of AI to support individuals with disabilities in achieving optimal participation and managing health limitations in a way that they are not disadvantaged by their disability.
