Siblings of People with Disability in Japan

  • Mariko Okishio

摘要

Families of individuals with disabilities often bear the responsibility for ongoing care, extending well into adulthood and beyond. Siblings play a crucial role in this dynamic, enduring lifelong relationship and often assuming caregiving responsibilities. While positive aspects, such as spiritual growth and enhanced social competence, have been noted, negative aspects, including feelings of embarrassment, jealousy, guilt, and anxiety, are also prevalent. Support for siblings, although essential, has often been overlooked. Although various support programs exist, there remains a need for greater awareness and tailored assistance to address the diverse needs and experiences of both child and adult siblings within the context of disability and illness.
