In order to support people with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) to live a sustainable and healthy life long-term and independent from the degree of their limitations, three dimensions are primarily needed: (1) a living environment that is designed to be both sustainable and health-promoting, (2) a healthy ecological system, and (3) a supporting society, focusing on the well-being of all people and preserving the natural environment. To achieve these goals, the possibility of social and health-related participation is indispensable, reflecting the heterogeneity of people with IDD, their different wants, needs, and their social and health-related vulnerability. Important starting points are hereby measures that soften the consequences of climate change, reduce further pollution, and particularly take into account how people with IDD and their caregivers are specifically affected.
