Neurobiology of Depression-Associated Disability: Gender-Specific Perspectives

摘要

Depression, particularly major depressive disorder (MDD), is the leading cause of disability worldwide, with significant gender-specific differences in prevalence, symptomatology, and impact on daily functioning. This chapter discusses the neurobiology of depression-associated disability from a gender-specific perspective. It explores how biological, social, and psychological factors contribute to the differential experience and progression of depression in men and women. The chapter further focuses on how depression-associated molecular and behavioral alterations lead to various disabilities, including cognitive impairments, chronic fatigue, sleeps and chronotype disturbances, and psychomotor retardation. The role of social determinants such as socioeconomic status, race, education, and geographic location in exacerbating disability, particularly among women, has been emphasized. Chronic pain, anxiety disorders, and cognitive decline have been associated to provide a compounded understanding of the effects of depression induced disability. The chapter also covers the impact of sexual dysfunction in depression, with a focus on post-SSRI sexual dysfunction (PSSD) and its gender-specific manifestations. Lastly, the concept of chronotype-related disability, referring to how an individual’s natural sleep-wake preferences can be impaired by depressive symptoms has been addresses. This comprehensive chapter provides an understanding of the neurobiology of depression-associated disability, highlighting the need for gender-sensitive approaches in research and in clinical practice to improve health outcomes for individuals with MDD.
