While biblical texts do not contain the specific word “disability,” they do contain a range of portrayals of disability. Textual boundaries of corporeal acceptability create negative judgements that effectively function as disability; some texts reflect a religious model, but others show a different relationship between disability and God. Disability can simply be a present characteristic, yet it can also be a linguistic or metaphorical weapon. In each case, disability is a narrative tool, wielded in whichever way a particular writer decides. Against a backdrop of considering what is typical in ancient societies, this entry will provide an overview of the types of issues present in Hebrew Bible and New Testament portrayals of disability. Examples of how disabled characters are depicted will demonstrate the complexity and nuances present in the biblical canon’s varying portrayals of disability, as well as how disability needs to be considered from alternative perspectives to avoid uncritically propagating ancient ableism.
