Aging with Disability

The number of older people, including those with disabilities, has increased substantially in most countries and it will accelerate in the next decades. Among this population, experts have established a distinction between two different phenomena: disability with aging (DWA, older people incurring into impairments) and aging with disability (AWD, older people who incurred into impairments during the developmental age). AWD has peculiar needs calling bridging aging and disability at knowledge, policy, and practice level. Starting from overview of the data of the longevity revolution and the peculiar characteristics and needs affecting persons AWD, the entry intends to offer a critical analysis of the main shortcomings still questioning this research field and to address the future challenges for supporting “successful aging with disability.”
