E-Learning for College Students with Disabilities in the UAE: Challenges and Solutions

Post-pandemic, e-learning has gained increased prominence among undergraduate and postgraduate students worldwide. Thus, higher educational institutions in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) are also increasingly offering more e-learning options to the students. The COVID-19 pandemic accelerated the adoption of e-learning in higher education, which presented unique challenges for student with disabilities (SWD). Therefore, it is paramount to analyze the e-learning experiences of SWD during the pandemic. This chapter explores the challenges encountered by college SWD in the UAE during the COVID-19 e-learning period by undertaking a comprehensive literature review. It delves into common hurdles, such as lack of training, accessibility issues, difficulties in online classes, and inadequate instructor support. Further, it proposes solutions to enhance the e-learning experience of SWD by drawing insights from various studies conducted in the UAE, including implementation of a Universal Design for Learning (UDL), crafting of effective e-learning policies, bolstering SWD and faculty preparedness, and offering on campus physical support when required. In conclusion, this chapter will assist the policymakers and educators to address challenges in designing of e-learning courses and improving the accessibility of e-learning for SWD, in alignment with the evolving educational landscape and the imperative for equitable access to education for all.
