Comprehensive Sexuality Education for Young People with Disabilities in Complex Context

All over the world, young people with disabilities face obstacles in accessing quality sexual health education in formal educational settings. In addition, disabled young people may experience lower access to formal education and higher rates of school dropout. The preexisting barriers to access sexually health education may be more pronounced for this group in complex contexts, which reinforce the importance to provide sexual health education to young people with disabilities outside of schools. An international technical and programmatic out-of-school guidance based on comprehensive sexuality education have been developed to that end. Despite the known benefits obtained from out-of-school comprehensive sexuality education programs, evidence highlights the presence of several challenges in implementing and adapting these programs to the local contexts. This contribution aims to present comprehensive sexuality education contextualized within international programs based on formal education, as well as the necessary considerations to adopt these programs for young people with disabilities outside of the school contexts.
