Persisting Inequalities: An Intersectional View of Climate Change, Gender and Violence

This chapter delves into the intersection of climate change, gender dynamics, and violence. It examines the detrimental impacts of climate change, with a particular focus on extreme weather events like floods, droughts, and rising temperatures. Importantly, it highlights how these effects disproportionately affect certain demographic groups, including women, girls, the elderly, and individuals with disabilities. Moreover, the chapter demonstrates how climate change exacerbates the incidence of violence against these vulnerable populations. For instance, it illustrates how female coastal and inland water fish vendors have encountered instances of sexual violence, directly linked to the depletion of fish stocks caused by climate change and overfishing. Additionally, it sheds light on how climate change disrupts traditional male roles as providers, which, in some cases, leads to heightened aggression, especially in conflicts with partners and children.
