Gender Violence: A Portrait of Women for Change’s Fight Against Gender-Based Violence in Zambia

Using the works of a women-led organization active in the area of gender violence in Zambia, this chapter explores how women-led initiatives are addressing gender-based violence against women in Zambia. The chapter draws on the involvement of Women for Change (WfC), a non-governmental organization with over 25 years of experience in gender-oriented work in the rural areas in Zambia. Informed by qualitative-based content analysis, the chapter shows that while cases of violence against women were on the increase, Women for Change was addressing the vice by providing support services to gender-based violence (GBV) survivors, fostering behaviour change through community outreach to prevent violence, and advocating against GBV in rural areas of Zambia. The chapter argues that women are critical drivers of change, especially when they initiate avenues for dealing with gender-based violence against women. Therefore, the efforts of women to curb gender-based violence ultimately contribute to the actualization of Sustainable Development Goal Number 5 on gender equality deserves documentation for posterity.
