Violence Against Disabled Children in Botswana

After 15 years, in 2020, the Government of Botswana has finally acceded to ratify the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (UN-CRPD) which has been in existence since 2006. This means children with disability (CwDs) and other people living with disability (PWDs) will hopefully benefit from inclusion. Findings from the study show that violence against children in Botswana is a serious national threat, and it is even worse in the case of children with disabilities who are shunned by family members. Findings revealed that children living with disability are prone to violence such as sexual abuse, emotional abuse, corporal punishment, and child labour. In addition, a major problem faced by the study is the limited availability of data on the number of children with disabilities as well as the number of cases of violence against children with disability.
