100 Years of Radio in South Africa: A Practitioner’s Reflections on Yesteryear

This chapter is a transcript of the opening remarks delivered by communications specialist and South African radio lay-historian Albie Modise at the “100 years of Radio in South Africa” hybrid symposium held in Cape Town and online on 14–15 June 2022 at the Cape Peninsula University of Technology. Modise was invited to deliver the keynote address at the symposium because of his extensive first-hand knowledge of critical milestones in the development of radio broadcasting in South Africa.
