Concluding Remarks

The contributions in this volume chronicle the story of radio in South Africa, from its inception up until now. Through these contributions, this volume provides insights into the history, development, and impact of radio in the country. The volume affirms radio as a powerful medium that contributes to humanity, particularly in precarious contexts such as those that characterised South Africa, a country that went through four different phases each with its own set of challenges. The phases were the colonial years, the apartheid years, the pre-dispensation interregnum, and the post-apartheid years that South Africa enjoys today. The volume provides glimpses of how the medium functioned from the very first formal broadcast in Johannesburg on 18 December 2023. It traces the development of radio in the colonial and the apartheid years in which it was linked to the apartheid state throughout the years of restructuring in the country and subsequent years of post-apartheid South Africa.
