Film and Financial Time

How do moving images address the new temporality that finance creates with its reliance on speculation, debt and derivatives, present futures and future presents? Zachary Formwalt’s moving image gallery installations, Three Exchanges (2011–2014), address the representation of the financial market at a point where high-frequency trading is executed in forms beyond the threshold of human perception. In the haunted narrative Yella (Petzold, 2007), the financial images we encounter register the spectrality of finance and the dangerous allure of its journeys into the future.
