Abstract This introductory chapter discusses how we should understand the range of contemporary cinema and the various moving image practices it comprises. It defines finance and financialization and shows how finance has been explored to date in film scholarship. It moves on to philosophical ideas on the relationship between the economic and the image and discusses essays by theorists such as Jameson, Beller, Deleuze, and Szendy.
