Local and Translocal Multilingual Tales of Cities and Their Communities

This rozdział/chapter explores works by Frisian Tryater (Netherlands), Lithuanian National Drama Theatre in Vilnius/Wilno, Czech-German network ČOJČ, and Teater Foratt and Teater JaLaDa in Malmö/مالمو/Malme. The discussions show how they use languages to reveal cross-temporal and cross-cultural spatialities within their cities, regions, and/or countries, revealing their connections to often distant physical, cultural, and temporal contexts. A special spotlight is on young audiences, and how different multilingual dramaturgies facilitate young audiences’ responses to their diverse spatial histories, speak to their current experiences of coming-of-age and education, and empower them for the future. The discussions speak not only to the urgency of creating theatre that matches the experiences of children growing up in multilingual contexts, but also in relation to the general development of all children, building personal resilience, empathy, and empowerment.
