Women Across Boundaries: Transnational Exchanges in Nineteenth-Century Europe—Rewriting Women’s History from a Transnational Perspective

This introductory essay examines the editorial agendas of nineteenth-century women who sought to participate in the literary and cultural life of Europe. Throughout the long nineteenth century, European women intellectuals promoted changes in society and culture by engaging in a transnational dialogue and conveying a message of equality through their books, their periodicals, and their salon gatherings. Despite recent efforts to map intellectual networks among nineteenth-century writers, women’s diverse roles as editors, translators, and salon organizers, and their role in the transnational arena have been overlooked. This essay explores the exchanges between women editors, authors, and salonnières who remain underrepresented in the English-speaking canon, and it seeks to elucidate transnational practices that allowed women to participate in the cultural sphere and expand their influence across borders.
