Clorinda’s Cosmopolis: Crisis, Reinvention, and the Birth of Búcaro Americano

  • Sarah Moody

摘要

Moody examines Matto de Turner’s production in the last decade of her life spent in exile in Argentina (1895–1909). Exile entailed a repositioning of the author regarding her own writing in the midst of this new cosmopolitan space defined by modernity, the influx of immigration, and financial uncertainty. Matto de Turner turns away from fiction writing and delves into the woman question in essays and articles. Her survival strategies shape her works and point to the resurgence of the professional woman writer who needs to publish in order to survive.
