Transnational Flows: Women Writing in the Long Nineteenth Century

The role of women intellectuals across and beyond national borders expanded rapidly at the dawn of the nineteenth century, thus allowing for a diversification of professional women writers on the literary scene. Women intellectuals participated in the public sphere as journalists, essayists, editors, owners of periodicals and magazines, critics, and translators. Such rich endeavors by women from across the globe constitute the core of our volume. The essays in this volume bear witness to the fruitful alliances established among women—and men—at a time of growing incursions of women into the literary, political, and economic spheres in France, Italy, Latin America and Spain. Our volume brings to light the strategies women devised to break down barriers and establish themselves as effective actors in traditionally male domains. The sections are connected by the transnational nature of the literary production that binds them, revealing the rhetorical strategies and approaches women employed to show their new ways of seeing and being in the world.
