The COVID-19 pandemic is a complex, unfolding disaster and the societal impact that its aftereffects may continue to have in the coming decades adds another layer of complexity. Between the number of people affected and the level of disability that post-COVID illness can cause, it can be staggering, if not overwhelming, to try and conceptualize what a post-COVID future will look like—let alone how to prepare for it. Attempting to draw upon historical events paints an incomplete and fragmented picture.
