The Genre

Opening with a definition of how to differentiate the campus queen narrative from other school stories, the fifth chapter unpacks how the genre explores patterns and power. Embedded here is Queen Question #5: To what extent is the campus queen genre limiting? Until recently, the genre has lacked diversity in its limited representation. In its historically narrow representation, in its traditionally limiting themes, and in its weaponization of gender and power, the genre poses significant challenges. Conventionally bound by outdated norms and teeming with stereotypes, the genre itself calls for a realignment, a renaissance, a reimagining. We expect more from the narrative today, and revision is on the horizon. This chapter surveys more recent publications and productions, books and films that push back on the genre’s historically problematic aspects and move it toward inclusivity and hope.
