Carcinoids are neuroendocrine tumors. The majority originate in three sites: the appendix, the rectum, and the small intestine. They are classified according to embryologic origin, histologic structure, and production of biologically active amines. Rectal carcinoids often are found incidentally on routine endoscopy. Tumor size, depth of invasion, and the presence of metastases have the greatest impact on survival.
