Impacted feces are those that cannot be eliminated from the rectum. The condition commonly is seen in elderly and hospitalized patients. Causes include medications that decrease gut motility, immobility, and decreased cognition. Digital examination commonly reveals a mass and a stercorally induced anal fissure. A more thorough examination and fecal disimpaction are done in the operating room under anesthesia.
