The importance of total exenteration is that a urologic cancer that has eroded into the rectum or a rectal cancer that has extended into the urologic structures potentially can be resected en bloc for cure. Even if a curative outcome is not achieved, complete exenteration provides local cancer control and palliative relief of urinary obstruction, fecal obstruction, and intractable pelvic pain.
