Squamous intraepithelial lesion (SIL) is an unexpected histological finding found in some hemorrhoidectomy specimens. All surgical specimens from the anal canal should be evaluated histologically so that the diagnosis is not missed. The presence of anal SIL prompts examination of other areas at risk for human papillomavirus infection, e.g., cervix, vagina, vulva, penis, and oropharynx.
