Management of enterocutaneous fistula is a multidisciplinary team effort involving committed specialists in surgery, gastroenterology, medicine, nutrition, enterostomal therapy, radiology, and mental health. Some will close spontaneously obviating the need for surgery. Some, although present, are almost asymptomatic; surgery may not be indicated in this group either. Definitive surgery is considered for enterocutaneous fistulae that persist despite optimal nonoperative support.
