Intestinal stomas serve as the end of the gastrointestinal and urinary tracts, protect distal anastomoses, and relieve obstruction. Appropriate stoma siting is critical to postoperative stoma management. The ability to obtain a predictable seal on the pouching system decreases peristomal skin problems and helps maximize a patient’s quality of life. General principles for the section of intestinal stoma sites are reviewed.
