Most frequently acute diverticulitis arises from inflammation or perforation of a single diverticulum. Diverticulitis may be uncomplicated or complicated. Factors that influence management include severity of disease, patient fitness for surgery, risks of surgical complications plus surgeon, and patient preferences.
