Unrelieved, sigmoid volvulus can result in complete large bowel closed-loop obstruction and vascular compromise of the sigmoid colon. Emergent volvulus decompression and stenting are accomplished by flexible endoscopy with the placement of a 36 Fr chest tube. The method transforms a potential surgical emergency into an elective operation.
