Calcaneus Fracture Failed Fixation

Calcaneus fractures account for nearly 2% of all fractures, with displaced intra-articular fractures (central fractures) accounting for 60–75% of these injuries. They mostly result from high energy traumatic injuries such as fall from height or from road traffic accident. Due to the unusual shape of the bone, the close association with three joints of the foot, and the absence of a medullary canal, reduction, and fixation options is complex. There is chronic pain and disability if adequate 3D reduction and stable fixation are not achieved, and long-term disability is often a consequence in this group of patients. Although deformity and disability are common in non-operatively treated cases, the problem may also be seen in fractures managed surgically due to failed objectives of the original fixation. Here, we discuss the aetiology of failure of fixation and steps that one has to consider for execution of successful revision surgery.
