Interoperability in Cloud IoT Platforms

This chapter focuses on interoperability of cloud-oriented Internet of Things (IoT) platforms. Cloud computing represents a key paradigm to support the development of advanced IoT platforms, which is the reason why the number of cloud-oriented IoT platforms is continuously increasing, exposing very different architectures, functionalities, and goals. However, such great variety of IoT products (combined with only partial understanding of their actual added values) is creating an entry barrier, which discourages both single user and organizations. INTER-IoT European Project represents a success story that solves the IoT interoperability issues and involves the main cloud IoT platforms. In particular, one of the main INTER-IoT products, i.e., INTER-MW, acts as a mediator between the IoT platforms and it offers an abstraction layer to manage the communication between the cloud IoT platforms. The INTER-IoT technical solutions to create a de facto global ecosystem of interoperable IoT platforms are presented in the following, and the exploitation of INTER-MW within the ACTIVAGE Project (a European Large-Scale Pilots on Smart Living Environments aiming to build the first Active & Healthy Aging European IoT ecosystem) is reported as use case.
