eHealth and Ageing Well

In the context of healthcare, the advancement of information and communication technologies (ICTs) serves as a baseline for innovations that facilitate information exchange between healthcare providers, patients, and communities, enabling the diagnosis of diseases in the early stages and further reducing healthcare costs. The concept of eHealth is nothing new; telehealth has been around for centuries, but a rapid evolution can be traced along with the invention of the telegraph, telephone, radio, computers, and, most recently, the Internet of Things (IoT). In this chapter, we provide a comprehensive review of health IoT concepts, context, and framework. Then, we share our experience on how to create IoT ecosystems for aging through “Large Scale Pilots” through initiatives funded by the European Commission. Further, we describe the knowledge gained in the ACTIVAGE Large Scale Pilot on Smart Living Environments for Ageing Well, with the aim of serving as a reference to share, replicate, and create when defining IoT solutions for health and well-being. Additionally, we describe the GATEKEEPER platform and its architecture for smart and healthy living at home. These projects, while responding to contemporary challenges in the eHealth domain, also showcase the difficulties arising from cross-cutting innovation and describe general concerns where eHealth and IoT meet, including interoperability and privacy matters.
