Enucleation

Enucleation is a surgical procedure in which the globe and the anterior portion of the optic nerve are removed from the orbit. It is mainly indicated in patients with intraocular malignancy. Enucleation usually has a major effect on the patient’s quality of life. The psychological support should be tailored to the needs of the individual patient. The surgical technique is challenging and requires deep knowledge of the procedure, the possible complications and the methods to achieve the optimal aesthetic results and prosthetic motility. The surgeon should consider the following: the choice of implant volume, the selection of implant material, the possibility of wrapping and pegging, the technique for the insertion of the implant in the cavity, and the suturing of the muscles on or in front of the implant. Enucleation can be a life-saving procedure which provides a satisfactory aesthetic outcome in most patients.
