Creating Inclusive Environments for Everyone, Disability or Not

  • Nils A. Kastberg

摘要

His entire professional life, Nils Kastberg has engaged with those excluded: internally displaced, refugees, indigenous population, persons living with disabilities, and in particular, those living with mental conditions and syndromes. From the personal level, to engaging with governments at national, regional and global level, Kastberg brings his personal passion to social transformation. His work at the Swedish Development Authority, at the Swedish Ministry for Foreign Affairs, at UN agencies such as UNICEF or UNHCR, or in the boards of various UN agencies or Foundations such as Special Olympics International, have been his platforms for pursuing change and social transformation. In this chapter, the author shares his experience, practice, views on how we can be a better neighbor to persons living with mental conditions or syndromes, and how to bring change and inclusion for them at family, community and country level, his vision for global change for them, and how the reader can be part of changing the situation for them. The problem are persons who consider themselves typical: changing their perceptions of persons living with conditions is fundamental to achieve change. In fact, typical persons most of the time “do not see them” with their soul: they only see them as “objects of care”, not persons who actually care and have abilities to transmit love unmatched by typical persons. Giving them a platform to develop and making inclusion a reality worldwide seems a real possibility when reading this engaging chapter, which we hope will engage you.
