Prenatal Genetic Counseling
摘要
Prenatal genetic counseling is a specialized form of counseling that provides information and support to individuals or couples who are expecting a child and are concerned about the possibility of genetic disorders or birth defects. This type of counseling is typically offered to those with a higher risk of having a child with a genetic condition due to factors such as advanced maternal age, a family history of genetic disorders, or a previous child with a genetic condition. Prenatal genetic counseling must be conducted by an experienced geneticist, as it represents a complex synthesis of several different moments, including a discussion of available genetic tests and evaluation of their results (pretest and posttest counselling). Prenatal genetic counselling is an essential tool for parents-to-be as it enables them to make conscious and genuinely informed choices through both extensive investigation and correct and comprehensive information. There is ample evidence that information improves awareness of pregnancy, its risks, and choices relating to it, ultimately improving patient satisfaction.
