Situating Scenes

Student writers are often advised “show, don’t tell.” In other words, concentrate on scenes. Using Cheryl Strayed’s “The Love of My Life” as an example, this chapter identities the moves that an author can make in a single essay. The analysis shows that authors of nonfiction do much more than write scenes.
