Katie Geneva Cannon’s Cross-Cultural and Bridge-Building Womanist Ethics

The central focus of this chapter is on the concept of the human person as deserving dignity and respect, a theological claim upon which Katie Geneva Cannon makes her case for solidaristic and transformative justice. These are relevant not only for women of color living in the USA but for all women across race, gender, class, and geographical locations. Cannon insists that the past and the present condition of people of African descent, particularly that of women across the continents, is a scandal to the gospel of Christ. This is a challenge to the professed integrity of the local and universal church/es, and it should outrage the professed morality of societies that claim to be religious and committed to the well-being of all in the society. Teresia Hinga, an African womanist ethicist and one of the founding members of the Circle of Concerned African Women Theologians, will be Cannon’s conversation partner.
