Introduction to Coded Optical Imaging

This chapter introduces coded optical imaging. The presentation starts with a discussion of the importance and limitations of conventional optical imaging, followed by the introduction of optical encoding as the solution to overcome the existing limitations. Then, the operating principle of coded optical imaging is reviewed. The ensuing discussion focuses on the origins of coded optical imaging and representative major events in the development of this field. Next, the reasons that contribute to the prosperity of coded optical imaging are presented, and its advantages over conventional optical imaging are described.
