Dialectics of Love and (Maternal) Power in Razinat Mohammed’s A Love Like a Woman’s and Other Stories

Most critics of Northern Nigerian literatureLiterature have portrayed women as characters who undergo stifling and condescending living. Hence, detestation, subjugation, oppression and relegation are the prevalent themes in studies on women in Northern Nigerian Literature. Contrarily, in most cultures of the north, women can nonetheless subtly dictate their lived experiences. Using Freud’s and other feminist psychoanalysts’ postulation of power, sexualitySexuality and gender, this chapter analyses some stories in Razinat Mohammed’sRadiant Mohammed A Love Like A woman’s in order to foreground ways northern Nigerian women transpose power and achieve motility in (re)shaping their circumstances and realities.
